Mayor’s Staff Prepares for Snow (Yay!)

January 10, 2011

Wearing jeans, sweatshirts, and suits, Mayor A C Wharton and City of Memphis division directors met last night for a quick “readiness review” to discuss today’s snowfall.

The City of Memphis does not close for inclement weather, but the divisions began preparing for the 3-6 inch accumulation last week: looking for snow chains for police and fire vehicles, topping off generators, and watching the weather.

Starting Friday, the Public Works division treated 300 lane miles, including overpasses, bridges, major intersections, and areas around hospitals and police/fire stations, with 13,000 gallons of liquid brine. The brine solution hinders ice and snow from sticking.

Beginning Sunday around 5:45 p.m., 14 sand/salt units began running throughout the city.

MLGW has extra crews on standby, and the engineering division has two signal maintenance crews on standby, as well.
