Mayor Urges Citizens: Check on 4 Door to Door

August 3, 2011

With temperatures at 104+, today promises to be the hottest day of the summer, and citizens of Memphis are being asked to “check on four door to door.”

“This summer is already one of the hottest on record, and the current heat wave is expected to continue through Thursday,” said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. “We’ve already had people perish from these deadly temperatures, so please check on at least four neighbors or family members and make sure they’re staying cool.”

Citizens are also encouraged to use city facilities such as libraries, community centers, and senior citizen centers as cooling centers.

Memphis police officers and firefighters are continuing to check on elderly residents and the homeless to make sure they are taking shelter in air-conditioned buildings and drinking plenty of fluids.

The city has identified temporary overnight shelters for homeless citizens during the extreme heat conditions. Single women who need overnight shelter should contact the Salvation Army at 543-8586; single men should contact the Memphis Union Mission at 526-8434. Families should call the Emergency Housing Assistance Hotline at 260-4663.

The Memphis Union Mission is also operating a daytime cooling center at 600 Poplar Avenue for both men and women and another at 383 Poplar for men only.

During this time of extreme heat, MLGW is not disconnecting any utilities due to non-payment.

For those MLGW customers who are currently without electric, gas, and/or water services due to non-payment or failure to complete MLGW’s required identification procedures, MLGW has started a weather-related reconnection program.

No matter what they owe, residential customers who have been cut off within the past 12 months can pay $275 to re-establish service. Customers are then required to enter into a deferred payment plan for the remainder of their outstanding balance.

To participate, eligible residential customers must pay $275 at one of MLGW’s five community centers: 245 South Main Street, 2935 Lamar Avenue, 1111 East Shelby Drive, 2424 Summer Avenue or, in Millington, 5131 Navy Road. To help accommodate these customers, MLGW’s community offices are open Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Friday from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. (with the exception of the Millington community office, which is open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday). In addition, MLGW will open all of its community offices on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

All of the above will remain in effect until the extreme heat advisory has been lifted.
