Vote for Booker T.
Our very own Booker T. Washington High School is currently one of six schools in the running to have President Barack Obama deliver their commencement address this year.
To help make it happen, go here to vote.
Booker T. Washington High used to have a graduation rate of 55 percent. However, last year, the class of 2010 hit the school’s highest graduation rate — 82 percent — in recent history, and we’re hoping for more of the same this year.
What’s more, from 2005 to 2010, the percentage of students going on to college went from 4 percent to 70 percent.
From the school’s essay:
“We are David, and our challenges are our Goliaths. Our school and community have placed the rocks of tenacity, empowerment and compassion in the slingshot we use to defeat our giants. Giants that are the by-products of poverty exist in our community, but we have been submerged in the belief that we have what we need to get what we want if we use what we have.”
