MEMPHIS, TN— Memphis Mayor A C Wharton gave the following statement in remembrance of Civil Rights great Dr. Dorothy Height:

“I was saddened to hear the news earlier today of Dr. Dorothy Height’s death.  She led the National Council of Negro Women with dignity and stood as a towering influence for equality for many years.  I was privileged to work with her in the 90’s during her association with the Black Family Reunion Gathering and Workshop Series in Memphis. She was a woman of grace and her intellect remained sharp throughout.  For the members of NCNW, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, civil rights organizations, and every individual dedicated to making America more open and accessible to opportunity, we’ve lost a legend.  The passing of Dr. Height and Memphis’ own, Dr. Benjamin Hooks just reminds us all of the burden to continue the fight for access and opportunity for all.”
