Wolf River Greenway Groundbreaking.
On Wednesday, February 10, Mayor A C Wharton participated in a groundbreaking event for Wolf River Greenway. The event marked Phase I of a 1.3 mile segment from Walnut Grove Road to Shady Grove Road. Boyle Investments generously gave the City of Memphis a conservation easement on the property for the phase, in order to preserve the land. The actual Grand Opening of this phase is anticipated for summer 2010.
Two additional phases/segments of the Greenway Trail are also in the works. Phase II will likely run from Shady Grove Road to the Germantown city limits – to ultimately link with existing trails. Both completed segments would create a 4.0 mile connected greenway along the south side of Shelby Farms. Phase III is set to run along the Mississippi River at the north end of Mud Island near Levee Road.
In 2007, City of Memphis Parks Division embarked on a Greenway Strategy to implement a 22-mile Wolf River Greenway, following adoption of the plan by Memphis City Council that year. The overall project is a collaborative partnership that includes City of Memphis, Hyde Family Foundations and Wolf River Conservancy.
